WOW!
FALL SALE OF RAM LAMBS!
** See discounted
prices below on selected rams. **
June 15, 2004
Greetings to Old Friends, New Friends, New Customers and other Icelandic Enthusiasts,
It seems every spring has its challenges. Sometimes the cold and ice of winter
hangs on too long, sometimes we can't get enough rain for the pastures and hayfields, and
sometimes there is too much rain and the wetland floods. This year it has been the
fox, or rather, the fox-es. We have lost five newborns to a family of
foxes this spring, despite our 6-strand electric fence and our two farm dogs.
One poor ewe had both of her twins stolen when they were just a few days old.
We've tightened up our gates and posts, brought in fill for the low places, and
both dogs are working overtime. Thankfully the lambs are also growing quickly, and
hopefully are now too big for a fox to take, so we are hoping that the fox danger has
passed for the year. It just goes to show that it is always something!
Our AI breeding program continues, with this being our sixth year of AI lambs and the
flock's genetic improvement continues onward. We even have some lambs this year with
three successive generations of AI, making them 7/8 AI blood. There are suddenly
very few ewes in our breeding flock that do not have any AI blood in their background.
We lost our two oldest ewes to old age this year, with two more being old girls to
be retired after weaning, so our flock is changing rapidly. While I absolutely miss
my old ewes, it is also exciting to see the improvement that the younger ewes bring to the
breeding program as they come out of the AI program themselves. All of our breeding
rams are out of AI lines now, sometimes on both sides of their family tree and the lambs
just keep getting better and better.
A very exciting development in the AI program has taken place both here at Jager Farm,
and within the Icelandic community. Southram Stud station has been working for a
number of years on a new process for AI, and this past November we were able to attend
their seminar and learn this exciting new process of Vaginal AI. No hormones
for sychronization, no invasive procedures, no expensive equipment, and no specialists
required! Just a teaser ram, a watchful eye for heats in the ewe flock, and a simple
pipette to inseminate the ewe. Wow! So simple, and so little stress, for the
ewes or for the shepherd! We were able to jump right into Vaginal AI when we
returned from Iceland, resulting in 7 pregnancies out of 13 ewes bred. Over 50% -
not bad for the first time ever! We are thrilled with the ease of the process and
its low cost, and will be importing more straws packaged for vaginal AI this coming
fall. This is the wave of the future!
Part of the week spent at the Southram seminar was spent touring the Hestur research
station, the Southram stud station, and several progressive sheep farms. We saw lots
of beautiful country, met some wonderful people, and saw some really good looking sheep.
Iceland has the benefit of a much larger breeding pool than here in North America,
plus about 50 more years of the AI program, and wow! Are those beautiful breeding
animals! Deep and wide chests for large capacity hearts and lungs, deep and thick
leg muscle, muscular shoulders, wide backs, lustrous fleece; I could go on and on! A
bit depressing to see how far we have to go, but exciting too as we could see what it was
that we were working towards. I was re-energized by our trip and ready to get back
to work.
Of course any discussion of breeding and genetic improvement has to include a statement
regarding our overall breeding criteria. Here
at Jager Farm, we evaluate each animal on its own merits, without regard to the source of
its bloodlines, or its color or pattern. Farmbred or AI, moorit
or white, we select our breeders and our culls depending on build, health, growth rate,
fertility, ease of lambing, mothering, and fleece. The AI program has
simply been an effective and efficient tool in this selection process, producing
outstanding individuals from which to choose our sale-list lambs and our own breeding
animals. We do not discriminate between farmbred or AI-bred in our selections, nor
in our recommendations to potential buyers.
Some general reminders: Our Scrapie flock number is MA10 and our status date is
November 9, 1999. (We are shortly to reach the status of Certified Scrapie Free!)
Remember that lambs born as a direct result of the AI process are limited to sale
to another flock enrolled in the Federal Scrapie Eradication Program; they will be marked
with an asterix. ~ We welcome calls or emails with any questions and will
always provide ongoing buyer support. ~ A phone call will hold an animal until
you can get a deposit to the post office, and a deposit of one third will hold an animal
until pickup or delivery.
Thanks for your time and interest!
